1.What have you done for your career?
“I was an RN at a hospital for most of my career but now I work as a school nurse at Friendship Elementary.”
I picked Jennifer because I knew that she had worked at a hospital put was no longer working there.
2.Did you enjoy working in the hospital and being a nurse?
“Most of the time I really enjoyed being an RN, it was exciting and interesting! It is a lot of work but I felt it was worth it.”
I am glad she said she enjoyed being an RN because I want to be a nurse!
3. Did you always want to be a nurse?
“For most of high school I knew I wanted to be a nurse, I wasn’t exactly sure though but when I got to college I was sure.”
I have always wanted to be in the medical field so I was wondering if she felt the same and she said she had a pretty good idea, so I hope i stick with my plans.
4.Was the nursing staff ever inadequately staffed?
“There were many times that I was working and we were short a nurse or two. We just kept on working and shared the load between who was there.”
This is a good response to back my research because there is a shortage in staffing in hospitals.
5.Did you ever pick up shifts you weren't originally scheduled for?
“Sometimes I would take an shift when they needed me to. The hospital can become very busy.”
This is helpful because she said she was working when she wasn’t supposed to which can lead to overtime violations.
6.Did you ever work more than 10 hours at a time?
“I don’t think I ever worked more than 10 hours but I think that I have gotten pretty close to 10 hours of work, but I know nurses that that have definitely worked for that long.”
There are a lot of nurses that are working longer and longer shifts that they shouldn’t have to work especially without breaks.
7.Have you ever felt that your fatigue could possibly affect your ability at your job?
“When you are working as hard as nurses do you are bound to feel fatigued. You are constantly standing, walking and doing something and it can get very draining but you just have to keep doing your job and what you are supposed to do.”
She says that fatigue is a normal thing for nurses but it doesn’t stop them from doing their job.
8.Did you ever feel forced to work overtime?
“Not necessarily, I did help them out sometimes though because I knew they needed me.”
According to some of the article I read, this is one of the main ways that employers get people to work overtime, kind of guilting them into it.
9.Did your contract involve mandatory overtime?
“I’m not even sure, maybe.”
Most nurses don’t know about a mandatory overtime clause in their contract and don’t know if its required or not.
10.If you did work overtime how were you paid?
"I don’t believe I was compensated any differently."
I think that nurses and other people just accept what they get payed without knowing.
